April 2008

A group of students sought out a particular doctor who is well versed in the philosophy of healing. Intrigued by the unorthodox and unique approach of this doctor in treating various disorders, these students wished to visit him in an attempt to gain a better understanding of what this doctor is doing that is so different. The doctor, unknowing to the students, is also a Zen master, invited the students to come by and visit. When the students arrived, they were greeted and shown around. The doctor then asked the group "what, then, can I do for you?" One of the students replied "teach us what you know and how it all works." Another student replied "your writings contradict what we were taught, show us how you arrive at your methods." And yet another replied "many of your beliefs do not follow what we learn in school, how can they work?" The doctor replied "if you learn truth or you learn error, regardless, in your mind you see it as truth." One student quickly replied "well, then, how do you know the difference?" The doctor replied "two thousand years ago the world was believed to be flat, today the world is believed to be a sphere."

Waiting for a further explanation from the doctor, the room fell into a sort of uneasy silence. Breaking the silence, one student raised the question "what does this have anything to do with medicine?" In the background, was heard a whisper of "yeah." The doctor, fully understanding their classroom mentality and what is transpiring in the minds of the students, simply replies "nothing, and yet everything." "What?", one of the students replied, adding, "can’t you just explain your beliefs to us?"

Continuing with a few more questions, the students were expecting answers as direct as the questions they asked. Many in the group, not truly listening to what the doctor was communicating, received answers that would ultimately lead them to their own understanding of the truth that they sought had they just contemplated what the doctor was saying. Somewhat disappointed by the answers they received, all but one of the students politely, but in obvious frustration, left.

"Are you going to join them?", the doctor asked to the one remaining student, who was one of the silent ones in the group. The student replied "no." "Now, then, what can I do for you?" "What is all this about the flat world?" the student asked. The master replied "two thousand years ago the world was believed to be flat. If someone, at that time, believed the world was round, they would be considered crazy, uneducated, or dumb. Today, the world is believed to be a sphere. If anyone believes today that the world is flat, they, likewise, would be thought to be crazy, uneducated, or dumb."

Intrigued by the simplicity and wisdom of the master’s answer, the student had many more questions. One by one, her questions were being answered. The student, an hour later, gained a deeper understanding of the master’s teaching, then asked the master "how, then, do you put all this together and know what to do and when to do it?" The master instructed the student "follow me."

The master, walking outside, showed the student a plant that was newly coming out of the ground. The master, pointing out what would be somewhat obvious to the student, said "the seed from which this plant came has no brain, no doctor, and no leader. The seed knows when and how to grow. All the seed needs is to be placed in a place that will allow it to grow in harmony with the Earth. The Earth does not lead astray the plants that exist with it in perfect harmony. It is no different for you or the patients you will see." As a smile came across her face, the master says to her "likewise, follow the natural path, and you will never be lead astray in your search for the knowledge of the truth."

The student asked if she can return and learn more, to which the master replied "you have already learned more than your friends who left will ever know." The master then invited her to come back whenever she would like. As the student was getting ready to leave, the master had a question of his own. "Where have your friends gone?", he asked. "Off to prove the world is flat I suppose," replied the student. The master replied "they will fall off their flat world, but you will never fall off your spherical world." The student went away enlightened.

Enlightenment regarding health and healing is not reserved for just a few. This enlightenment, however, will not come to those that walk away, as did the majority of the students in the above illustration. True health is available to everyone and is easier to obtain than one might think. In the book, Why Am I Sick And What To Do About It , I have clearly explained what health really is, and, more importantly, how to obtain it. A preview of the book Why Am I Sick And What To Do About It can be found at http://rue309.com/whyamisick.html  , or you can use the links above if this is the original article and not a copy by the web bots. The information provided on each page is designed to give an overview of what each chapter contains. The book, having gone to print, will be released sometime in June 2008.

Multiple Personality Disorder, more recently renamed to Dissociative Identity Disorder has made its way into the news recently. For this article, I shall use the term Multiple Personality Disorder, simply because I like the older term better than Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Herschel Walker, the former University Of Georgia superstar and Vikings running back revealed last year that he has Multiple Personality Disorder. In his new book, Breaking Free , Mr. Walker is reported to link the cause of his disorder to traumatic events that occurred during his childhood. Mr. Walker describes how Multiple Personality Disorder has affected his life and how he has worked to control it.

According to modern medicine, Multiple Personality Disorder is a controversial diagnosis. With the publication of Walker’s recent book, the controversy is sure to be accelerated to new heights. Just what is Multiple Personality Disorder? Is it a true disorder, or simply a made-up disorder, as modern medicine would have us believe?

Multiple Personality Disorder is considered a mental condition in which two or more distinctly identifiable personalities exist within the same person. Each personality is expressed at different times, but not simultaneously. The defining feature is a significant degree of identity alteration. When a personality switch occurs, the person will exhibit different behaviors, personality traits, thought patterns, and cognitive abilities. Mutual exclusion of the characteristic personality traits of each identity is also seen in Multiple Personality Disorder. Distinct memories associated with each personality are also characteristic of Multiple Personality Disorder. This mutual exclusion of memories is seen to varying degrees in both the long term and short term memory of the affected person. The person, therefore, often will not remember what transpired when another personality was in control. As a result of different memory sets, the person with Multiple Personality Disorder will have separate sets of life experiences.

The question of whether Multiple Personality Disorder is an actual disorder or an invented one has been under question in recent times. Enormous amounts of medical research support the existence of Multiple Personality Disorder. Electroencephalogram (EEG) studies support the theory of the potential existence of multiple personalities in one person. Sufficient objective and subjective evidence is submitted by researchers that clearly support the existence of the condition. The opinions put forth by decades of research, for some reason, have been ignored in favor of the unsubstantiated opinion that the disorder is of a questionable existence. Since no medical treatment for Multiple Personality Disorder can be offered, the physician who diagnoses the condition has essentially put forth a dead end diagnosis. The medical profession has no pill to prescribe, no body part to extract, and no brain surgery that can cure the condition. Any treatment, therefore, is limited to non-medical protocols. With no medical treatment available, it is easily understood why the existence of the condition is under question.

If we examine the concept of Multiple Personality Disorder, we have a well-defined collection of clearly related personality characteristics. Clearly identifiable characteristics associated with the same condition, which are observed to occur in a definable segment of the population, simply does not occur by chance. When something does not occur by chance, yet cannot be clearly proven, it is nothing more than concrete evidence the cause has not been found. A problem arises, however, when we believe that a cause, in every case, must exist. No consideration is given to the possibility that Multiple Personality Disorder is a natural condition and therefore has no cause. The characteristics associated with Multiple Personality Disorder are very specific. Furthermore, the experiences described by patients reflect high specificity and great reliability. The condition cannot be simulated or faked even by the most knowledgeable individual. Logic, therefore, must lead us to conclude that we have a clearly defined condition. If we have a clearly defined condition, it cannot be simply dismissed as nonexistent.

Modern medicine has failed to explain the inner workings of Multiple Personality Disorder. This, in fact, is why the disorder has landed in the controversial category. Multiple Personality Disorder can be simply explained, the problem is that modern medicine, in ignoring the knowledge and wisdom of alternative medicine, will never arrive at a true understanding of the disorder. In gaining a true understanding of Multiple Personality Disorder, the appropriate course of action in handling the disorder becomes evident. In the book, Why Am I Sick? And What To Do About It, the inner workings of Multiple Personality Disorder are revealed. Understanding the inner workings of the disorder will also reveal that Mr. Walker is correct in his assessment that the disorder, in his case, originated from traumatic events during childhood.

Can a food allergy cause hypothyroidism, eczema, joint pain, muscle spasms, muscle pain, or lack of energy? The answer to this question is yes, it most certainly can.

Medical treatment of the above disorders is to treat the individual complaints and symptoms of the patient. Synthetic thyroid hormone would be prescribed for hypothyroidism. Steroids most likely will be administered for the eczema. For joint and muscle pain, in some cases the patient would receive a prescription for an anti-inflammatory medication. In other cases, an over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory might be suggested. If the compliant of muscle spasms were vocal enough, the patient might receive muscle relaxants. Any lack of energy would most likely be dismissed as chronic fatigue syndrome, and may result in a few blood tests to make sure the patient does not have an underlying biochemical cause for the fatigue. Any blood analysis, however, typically would not reveal anything out of the ordinary. All these treatments involve nothing more than the suppression of symptoms. None of these medications address the true underlying cause of the patient’s complaints.

A certain type of food allergy exists that can disrupt the biochemistry of the entire body. In this type of food allergy, a certain type of antibody binds to undigested proteins that have been allowed to pass through the intestinal wall. Allergies of this type are of a delayed onset. Symptoms generally appear from eight hours to several days following exposure to the food causing the problem. With repeated exposure to the problematic food, symptoms never cease. Specifically, an antibody binds to a protein found in a particular food to which the patient is allergic. This antibody and protein pair is called an antibody-antigen complex. This antibody-antigen complex results in a cascade of events, and places the body in a chronically inflamed state. Depending on many factors, specific organs may become more inflamed than others. The end result will be any number of both vague and specific complaints that are seemingly unrelated, but are, in fact, related to the foods responsible for the immunological response.

A specific type of food allergy test can be run to identify sensitivity to elevated antibody levels specific to foods. In the last month, I have ordered this test for six patients with complaints similar to those above. In every case, the test has identified those foods that cause a severe immunological response in the respective patients. No pill, no herbal remedy, and no food touted to have miraculous properties would have caused the condition of these patients to reverse. The only treatment that could possibly work is to completely eliminate the foods causing the problem from the diet. Without the test, however, identifying the offending foods would have been next to impossible.

Eliminating the foods causing the problem from the diet, however, is not enough. In cases of this type of food allergy, the intestinal lining is often found to be damaged. If left alone, this type of damage to the intestinal lining would eventually lead to more serious gastrointestinal disease, such as gastric or duodenal ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, ulcerative colitis, or Crohn’s disease. Damage of any sort to the intestinal lining is a serious matter and must be corrected. Fortunately, this type of damage can easily be repaired, usually taking no longer than two months.

In identifying the true cause of the problem, the appropriate treatment becomes clearly evident. If the true cause, however, remains undetected, the patient is found taking pill after pill to suppress any number of symptoms that may arise. Getting off the road of symptom suppression and on the road to identifying the true cause of the problem is a much more desirable path than taking pills every day. In the book, Why Am I Sick? And What To Do About It, this type of allergy is discussed, along with recommendations on how to correct the associated problems.

Just what should a man or woman know in order to be "in the know" about health? Is there some inside information kept secret by some special elite, some special knowledge, or some secret formula that most health professionals either do not know or will not tell? If there is some special knowledge, where is it contained? If some secret formula exists, what is it, who has it, and how much does it cost? Can it even be bought?

To many people, the thought of contracting incurable diseases and permanent conditions is deeply disturbing to contemplate. For one thing, the manifestation of a serious health condition seems unfair, people who have done nothing to deserve it are afflicted while others are seemingly not. Equally as disturbing is the thought that existence is dependent on taking pills every day. It is quite sad when someone finds out too late that something could have been done earlier to restore their health. With the proper information and guidance, however, restoring health can actually be accomplished quite easily. If the true cause of a disease or disorder can be identified and corrected, the disease process will ultimately reverse and health will be restored.

Chronic disease sufferers not only suffer physically, but emotionally as well. In most cases, however, the disease process does not have to follow the expected course of taking its toll on the body and the mind. The expected course of a disease, incidently, is termed expected because if nothing is done to find the real problem and reverse the disease process, all sufferers of the same disease generally follow the same predictable downhill pattern. The expected course, however, is not the only course available. To avoid the expected course of a disease, all it comes down to is finding the problem, fixing it, and making sure the disease process is not allowed to happen again. When this is done, a new course is charted, the course to health.

A type of individual, however, can be found that rarely, if ever, gets sick. Oddly, this type of person also rarely, if ever, seeks the advice of any health care professional. How could excellent health be afforded to this group of people considering the fact they are not even searching for it? If we can somehow learn their secret, and apply those principles to our life, will it make us healthier too?

The diseases and syndromes discussed in this book have the common characteristic in that they originate from multiple causes. Additionally, the diseases discussed are primarily treated by the medical profession in a way that suppresses symptoms rather than treat the root cause. The goal of the illustrations presented is to encourage getting off the road of symptom suppression and onto the road of eliminating the real cause of the disease. Most important, however, is identifying the root causes and making sure the disease or problem does not happen again.
